MySanAntonio.com reported on the incredibly tragic story of a woman who was killed in an auto accident with a suspected truck thief last week. San Antonio police claim that an undercover officer witnessed a man named Alejandro Orozco Jr steal a truck from a shopping center parking lot at around seven in the evening on September 21st. San Antonio police further reported that the undercover officer attempted to covertly follow the stolen vehicle, but the officer eventually lost sight of the truck. The officer called for backup officers and a police helicopter, and at some point the alleged thief attempted to accelerate quickly to evade those officers and crashed into at least five other cars. Orozco is expected to face a murder charge for the incident.

Stolen Vehicle Accidents

Recovering compensation for an accident with a stolen vehicle is complicated, but an experienced accident lawyer can help in this terrible situation. The car insurance policy that covers the stolen vehicle itself can not be held responsible for your damages. The owner of a stolen car is typically exempt from responsibility for damage caused by the acts of a criminal thief. The criminal can be held liable, but often-times people who steal cars often do not have the assets or insurance coverage necessary cover all of your losses. This leads to a situation where under Texas law, a stolen vehicle is treated much like an uninsured vehicle. In accidents with uninsured vehicles Texas motorists will generally be forced to look to their own insurance company for compensation.

What if the other driver doesn’t have insurance?

In Texas, car insurance companies offer uninsured motorist coverage. Now is the time to check on your available uninsured motorist coverage. You may also have relevant collision coverage. In Texas you can purchase uninsured motorist bodily injury insurance, that may be an advisable precaution for many drivers. If your insurance company offers you a settlement that falls short of covering your injuries, please do not hesitate to contact an experienced car accident attorney immediately. Every insurance settlement offer should be met with skepticism. Insurance companies offer quick settlements in the hope that they can settle the case before you realize the full extent of your damages and how much you can recover. If you have been injured in a stolen vehicle accident, you deserve full compensation.
